2003 IRS Mileage Rates:

  • The standard mileage rate for the use of a car for business purposes is 36 cents a mile for all business miles driven, down from 36.5 cents a mile in 2002.
  • The standard mileage rate for the use of a car when giving services to a charitable organization remains at 14 cents a mile.
  • The standard mileage rate for the use of a car for medical reasons is 12 cents a mile, down from 13 cents a mile in 2002.
  • The standard mileage rate to use when computing deductible moving expenses is 12 cents a mile, down from 13 cents a mile in 2002.

401(k) Contribution Limits:
For 2003 the maximum you can contribute to a 401(k) plan is $12,000. That limit will increase by $1,000 each year through 2006.

If you are 50 years or older you can also contribute an additional "catch up" amount of $2,000 in 2003. this limit will also increase by $1,000 each year until 2006.

 

IRA Contribution Limits:
For 2003 and 2004 the maximum you can contribute to a traditional IRA is $3,000. In 2005 the limit increases to $4,000. If you are 50 years or older you can contribute an additional "catch-up" amount of $500 each year.

 

Social Security (OASDI) Limits:
The Social Security Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program provides a limit to the amount of earnings subject to taxation in a given year. In 2003 the base is $87,000. Earnings up to the $87,000 limit are taxed under Social Security at the OASDI rate of 6.2 percent each for employees and employers.

The OASDI tax rate for self-employment income in 2003 is 12.4 percent.
